As a symbol of the season
the advent wreath beside the altar
reminds us that Christmas
is near, it’s coming closer..

Its leaves and candles
green, purple and pink
have important meanings
God has no beginning nor end.

Its circular shape with candles
anticipates that Light of Christmas
brings to the fore God’s origin
He’s the Alpha and Omega.

We find reason to rejoice
we see beyond its meaning
it’s a joyful celebration
a way to look at it with wonder.

We sing some Advent songs
we light the candle each Sunday
these are beautiful expressions
of our faith in this Church year.

Scriptural readings convey
the theme of preparation
they’re proverbial in tone
the twin meaning of his coming.

God’s mystery of Incarnation
God’s mystery of his Second Coming
oh, they’re combined with meaning
as a great history of our salvation.

Across the length of our history
as a church in this world of migration
there’s one thing to be recalled
it’s not our role to predict the future.

As our journey for Advent reveals
may God’s presence with us
be felt in countless encounters
a commitment to loving others.
