Poem Commentary

web def of home: A place where a person feels they truly belong. A safe place full of loved ones, happy memories and favorite things. A reliable place or concept or person who you can always rely on no matter what. being home sick is when you find out your reliable is unreliable after all, and that we all do fall.

HOMESICK

Just a little bit homesick

I miss the family before the fall

The house before it emptied

The time before the time ran out

The constancy I held comfort in

Every ones leaving the families gone

They all have an agenda

Yet life moves on

I need something still

            Something steady

            Something like a home

But I refuse to let this SICK new dynamic

Be my normal

I won’t get used to it

I refuse

I won’t let this be my home

I will go somewhere else if I need comforting

And if I click my heels I won’t come here

I will be a nomad if I have to

A traveler if you will

If home is where the heart is

Then my heart can stay right here in my chest

If I need a place to hang my hat
it will stay right here on my head

Weird how family can fly right out the window

I cannot sleep

Though I’m in my bed

Because the place I rest my head is not my home

HOME IS A DREAM I BUT BREIFLY OWNED.

Hannah, I jumped over to read some of your stuff - out of curiosity for who would be saying nice things about my poetry. A lot of folk on here say nice things but don't mean them - fishing for compliments. Didn't get that vibe from your very kind note at all. You actually have something of a gift for poetry. I've taught writing and seen a lot of 15 year olds write poetry. Most of it is dismal and self-serving. But while your work has traces of the novice poet, there is a voice and a gift for turning a phrase that seems to be blooming the more you write. You are wise to read the poetry of others. Even bad poetry can teach you something if you let it teach you why a poem fails. A word about spelling. Misspell only when you are doing it deliberately. It's a poetic tool to be used carefully. Thank heaven for spell-check. At any rate, you have some growing talent. Use it to help free you from the little traps that adolescense sets for us all. Learn to read things that take you beyond yourself. Let such works teach you to think without reference to hormones, financial worries and the social tortures high school inflicts on you. The process of learning the craft of poetry will help hone your mind, clear away the cobwebs from your heart and help you to use your words like a musical instrument. I look forward to seeing more of your work as you turn your poet's eye on things outside the narrow range of your 15 year-old's eye. God bless you in your journey. Tom King

thanks for the advice im glad that you took the time to help me out=]

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
