I Know Why Great Minds Kill Themselves
They say ignorance is bliss
They forget to mention intelligence is turmoil.
Not a month goes past
without my superior memory,
reminding me of the worst parts of my life.
Not a week goes by
that I do not ache for the state of the world.
Not a day passes
that I am not analyzing every move and countermove.
Not an hour gets lived in the moment. . .
I understand why Hemmingway drank,
Why Turing sided with cyanide,
How Van Gogh slept a bullet off
And how Cobain took a bullet to the brain.
Why Hendrix ate yellow jack'ts
How Thomas Paine drank the pains away.
She was so smart.
He had such a gift.
Why would anyone - -
with such potential - -
do something like this?
They say only the good die young
Only the great never really live at all.
