Opening Up

We opened up the world today,

But please stand six feet apart.

What kind of world is it

If we can't hold friends close at heart?

We opened up the world today.

Everyone must wear a mask.

What kind of world is it?

If seeing you smile is such a task?

We opened up the world today.

But only for some.

As many shops died along the way.

Did they deserve to be hung?

We opened up the world today,

But please refrain from cash.

What if that's all I have sir?

We've drained our whole stash. . .

We opened up the world today.

Yet I could not go to work.

For cutting hair and fixing backs

Is somehow less important than a clerk.

We opened up the world today.

But Sarah wasn't here.

She's got diabetes you see.

She's told to still live in fear.

We opened up the world today

Yet the neighbor isn't out.

I saw Jackson hit her face

I often heard them shout. . .

We opened up the world today

But your aunt won't be by.

She is still mourning your cousin

That she couldn't comfort as he died

We opened up the world today

But funerals are still banned

We can't place him in the ground.

You're lucky we even have cremations canned.

We opened up the world today.

But nothing is quite right.

Because of some lies in China

And a few who took the wrong flight.

We opened up the world today

But we should not open up dissent

For anytime you say, no way, too far

They shout back about killing two percent.

They opened up the world today

But with more rules than before.

I cannot carol at Christmas

Nor swap trading cards anymore.

They opened up the world today

But I barely know the same people.

For six months in lockdown

Had made having friends near illegal.

They opened up the world today

But I don't know what that means

The world is all topsy turvy

Nothing is the same it seems

They opened up the world today

But that is all a rouse.

For covid 19 was a pandemic sure

But I think it was just a clever excuse.

They opened up the world today

But discussing things wasn't approved.

I don't know who organized this

But our constitution has been removed.

I can not assemble anymore.

I can not petition door to door.

I can not speak without a censor.

I can not congregate nor pastor.

I can not protest this culture war.

They opened up the world today

But I am not convinced.

The world we emerge into

Is worth all the hesitance.

They opened up the world today

But it's not much at all.

I don't think we can go back

To where we were in twenty-nineteen's fall.
