Poem Commentary

mr. sparkle, is a departure from my other poems in that it is darker and has more of an infusion of a life out of control and a deeper melancholia.

mr. sparkle

i am an errant ambulance
sirens screaming, tires reaching for the road
speeding through your deepest dreams

i am a walking nightmare
stumbling through your backyard
bloodied and burst at the seams

don't bring a kite to a knife fight
advice from the fated, befallen
sin howls from the hills on this night
when him come callin'

i step out under a street lamp
and i feel like a headliner
i am mr. sparkle
singin' my city blues
teary-eyed and soaked with booze

and i've been fighting again

friday night is for guitars
vodka shots and new scars

there are girls in the boy's room
pills and pain
excuses exhumed
deceit and perfume

be careful where you leap
all is not true or exposed
and death is still surprisingly cheap

i have always been bad
i have always been a mess
mom said,"stay away from the wrong crowd"
but look at how i'm dressed

saturday is filled with apologies
and screeched speeches
and i want to pull out my own eyes

on sunday while you pray
i will be on the wrong doorstep
screaming into a busted cell phone
with my own understanding
that sticks and stones
will someday kill me

been fighting again

mr. sparkle

Thank you so much, king. Always a pleasure to read your remarks and even better to visit your very very unique mind.

What a powerful poem!! This evokes my memories of being an O.R. nurse on call for emergency surgery in Elizabeth, NJ. Friday night was ruefully referred to as the meeting of "The Knife and Gun Club" in the O.R. Your poem tells the bleak story behind it all. Wow!- strong, scary- wonderful write.

Thank you, Lisa ! Like someone said earlier. "It's an unforgiving role."

You have crafted a compelling tale of sordid bleakness and managed to do so in the most stunning way! I love your use of imagery and metaphors here. Extremely well done!

Your gift of raw clarity is rare Crush. Observe then dissect. Your pen is your scalpel and life is on the table.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
