A Moral Temperament
A Moral Temperament
Not all thine life is worth bullion of gold,
has darkness not shadowed and devoured your soul?
To temper a steel into a sword,
that steel must first be hammered and forged.
The blade beheld by right or wrong,
nonetheless;
that blade be strong.
Greed is weak as precious metal,
cast in coins from smelting pots.
Envy drink or home or daughter,
with that coin we bought or bartered.
Blood shed neighbor, friend, and kin,
henceforth a love of death and sin.
The hand that hold the higher power,
hold the light that darkness slain.
That in which a man surrenders,
transcends to righteousness or pain.
The object which our faith empowers,
right or wrong it knows no name.
Not all thine life is worth bullion of gold,
has darkness not shadowed and devoured your soul?
