    Poem Commentary

This is a true story. It happened one summer evening as I played with my grandaughter when she was about 7 years old.

I I TAUGHT A CHILD TO BELIEVE TONIGHT

I taught a child to believe tonight, gave her something to dream,
She reached for a branch on my tree, couldn't reach it, a frustrated scream.
I held it down to her size, she pulled a branch off with a smile,
She siad thank you for your help, I'll do it myself in a little while.

She counted the leaves on the branch, came up with the number seven,
I told her how very special that was, not nine, ten or eleven.
As she asked me why so special, my mind raced to answer this little one,
I boldly stated because, it's the seven leaf fickle finger of fargon!

Now I've gotten myself in deep, this child smarter than I,
Too late to back off, too proud to run and cry.
Anticipating her next question, to get me out of a hole so deep,
I said it can make your dreams come true, close your eyes as you sleep.

She closed her eyes and took a breath, jumped as high as she could be,
For the first time in her life, pulled a branch off that tree.
A wide eyed grin came across her face, with pride she held it high,
And told me how right I was, she'd never forget this special night.

I taught a child how to believe tonight, I watched her do something new,
I was as proud as I could be, as she achieved what she could not do.
I taught a child how to believe tonight, more important she taught me,
Give a child an ounce of love, it comes back fold times twenty!

Very encouraging to aid a child in discovering "I CAN!" I remember the excitement in my boys faces and eyes each time they learned he could do something new.

Thank you, I love reveling in the wondes a child sees and discovers on each new venture.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
