Southern Cookin what's that Good lookin
You've taken me back
some 40 years to Mississippi
Some 30 years before
I became a hippy
I was just 19 my hair not wavy
cut to crew cut, the style of the navy
But when we did venture to town on a trist
when early for lunch Mama Jeans on the list
Biscuits and gravy with all the fixins
and pot liquor ham was best for the dippin
Bring on the collards and black eyed peas
this food for the soul, twas all I needs
And the price was right we didn't have much money
but Mama loved sailors especially those that were funny
And said just a dollar 25
and give me a big kiss honey!
She loved the boys her flag they did hoist
north, east, west and south from coast to coast
To support these young men with patriotic verve
she loved, fed and nurtured all those that did serve
now when I'm in the kitchen and soul food I'm fixin
with memories of Mama Jean a sure country fried vixen
I think of you always
your cookins my pleasure
from the bottom of heart
I'll love you forever
