The Pendulum
The pendulum swings from right to left, left to right
Endlessly it keeps its rhythm and does not question
Where the time goes or how it’s being spent
It urges, gently, persistently the passing of things
That were perhaps here just a moment ago
Yet even time is beyond its control
Its job is only to swing to and fro
Giving the hands time to move ever forward
Giving the hands the energy
To wipe the last slate clean
With each gradual moving of the hands
Another grain of sand slips through
The fingers of even the strongest man
Falling gently and silently upon
The shores of time
And it is hardly noticed with the naked eye
Yet has an impact, so great,
That it can hardly be described or fathomed
The pendulum swings
The sands glide gracefully
Quietly, and soon the effects are apparent
Soon all that steady swinging accumulates
We see where all that time has gone
Where it has taken us and others
What it has truly accomplished
As it relates to us and our part in this world
But I ask you will you worry over things you cannot stop
Or even hope to slow down
Will you watch the pendulum swing?
Watch the hourglass or the shores of time become more grand
Or will you try to fit as many worthwhile things as you can
Into every swing of the pendulum
