Our Hero Came Home Today

Our Hero Came Home Today

When he left to serve his country,
he left with pride and hurry;
He had always been
the shining light in his parents eyes,
since he was a small child.
He had always dreamed
of becoming a hero
by fighting at point zero.

He used to sit on his Grandpa's lap
where some of the times took a nap.
Grampa would tell him stories
of the war long, long ago.
They loved sharing lemonade,
that Grandma squeezed by hand.
It quenched their thirst on a warm summers day,
as they sat together in the sun's rays.

They talked about being soldiers,
where most never grow older?
He dreamed of faraway places,
and would land on unknown spaces.

He always said he wanted to earn his wings,
and the pleasure they would bring.
We always knew he would do just that,
for that is where he was at.
Our hero came home to us today,
it took eighteen years for he to stay.
He earned his wings along with a purple heart,
which punctured our souls like a flaming dart.

Our son made us extremely proud,
of which the words we shout out loud.

I cannot comment because the tears have submerged my words literally. Thru my tears I send my prayer of comfort and extend my arms and want to convey I am proud that they are my neighbors. May their sacrifice not be in vein but lead to world peace. I still will not give up that hope.... Yet, that old bad taste returns to my mouth as I know that despite many years advocating for peace that it all obviously fell on deaf ears. In fact, instead of getting closer to the reality of peace; it seems the subject just like religion just drives us further apart.

My husband is retired Air Force and my oldest son did a tour of duty in the Army. I am opposed to war, but not to WARRIORS. I'm so appreciative that the warriors in my life made it home safely; but I always stop when I feel too "blessed" and remember...revere those who came home draped in a flag - and the families who received that flag in lieu of their loved ones' life. Bless you for this poem.

Again I thank you, I try to write a good poem, but it's usually a hit or a miss. Mary

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
