    Poem Commentary

I wrote this poem to my Uncle Dave right before my 13th birthday. We were poetry pen pals at the time.

    Dear Dave

I’ve been around the same kids almost all my life
With their every word and action cutting like a knife

My mom got sick of being mistreated so
She decided it was just time to go

We were in debt with our house
And my mom wanted a divorce from her spouse

We sold the house and moved out
Into one that needed fixing no doubt

I’ll be going to 8th grade in a week
Here’s hoping I’m not the geek

    I’m very frightened to go
For there is no one that I know

I’m sure I’ll be fine if I start in style
I’ll get used to everything in a while

Well, enough about me and more about you
Write me a letter and tell me what’s new

I love and miss you a lot
And hope to talk to you more sooner than not

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
