Dancing Away From Me
My first steps were slow,
Unshore and faltering.
You offered me a hand,
Tied me to the ghost
Of underplayed
Masculinity.
You were a 21st century
Activist.
Liberal gentleman,
Utilitarian artisan.
You were my very own
Walking contradiction,
And I was having
The time of my life.
You were never tender
At the start
You were detached,
Full of life and love.
You were a spirit out to see.
And then I was your anchor.
Unwanted shackles.
I was the old and weary
Wanderer.
You were the aspiring
Freedom-fighter.
I think you want to give in
Did; didn’t. Who the hell knows?
We danced a sultry waltz
A staccato flamenco,
Our music was like wildfire.
Then you made the mistake
Of pausing and smelling
The too sweet air.
I danced on and you slowed.
I tried to pull you too,
But you looked back.
Sighed.
Remembered.
Wandered away.
You were lost.
