They can say what they will, I disagree.

They can say what they will, I disagree.

The odds are stacked against us,

We are an ocean apart,

They say it is an impossible war,

A battle already lost.

I disagree.

My mind and heart are my shields,

The gleaming steel of endurance,

I have reconciled myself to the fall,

My plummet and descent into you.

They say I should give up the fight,

Accept the inevitable,

That I am a fool, a dreamer,

Doomed to fail.

I disagree.

We are stronger than this,

The wall of stone shall weather,

We shall recall the sword of truth.

For we have never lied.

They say that they are black promises,

That were exchanged a year ago,

Never meant to last,

Soon to fail.

I disagree.

They have already stood tall,

Survived the worst,

Are strong and waiting,

Older yet than they know.

I took an oath,

Swore to stay the same,

To remain and retain the essence of me,

I renew, rename and remember that here.

Their words are venom,

Seeking to stay,

The honesty on my lips,

The truth within me.

You are the only cure,

By plight, promise, soul deep troth,

We shall remain, deep true and pure.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Yes I do see where you are coming from, and read in the right light your observations become apparent. Sincere thanks again, Narrator.

Hmmm many ways to take this. I like how it doesn't directly give its meaning. At first I thought it a poem about the war, but perhaps about a distant love? Or maybe even an idea of truth stacked against a crowd of opinionated lies. Reguardless, its mettle is felt through its repeated stand of disagreeing. For if anyone has the passion to stand against odds in the face of adversity, it is a poet. Sometimes we do have to swim against the current. Well worded.

Thank you again for your wonderful insight! The ambeguity was intentional, all poems I think must sing the song of the reader's heart as much as the poet's. This one is about love and the difficulty encountered in the journey to the 'happily ever after', about finding courage against the odds.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
