    Eighteen

You are eighteen but sometimes you act like you are two
And let me tell you what you have a lot of growing up to do
You say you want to save up money so you can be on your own
I give you a week before you you’re on the phone calling home

You rant and rave when things don’t go your way
Then we need to watch out because there goes our day
Nothing is ever handed to you on a silver plate
Haven’t you learned anything from our mistakes?

Are you just that blind you don’t take the time to see?
That everything just isn’t always about me, me, me!
You have a new boyfriend, new school, new job, but for how long?
And Just remember as fast as it came it can all be gone

We ask you a question and you go on a rampage
For once in your life can you finally act your age?
You said some things that hurt me really bad
Do you care that your family is all you have

Nothing I have done for you is what you say
I just can’t believe you said that to mom that day
I picked up your boyfriend, brother and would take them to school
And pretty much anything you asked me I would do

Then you tell me that you won’t drive me anywhere
Do you think you’re hurting me think of your niece and nephew is that fair?
Knowing darn well that I am not allowed to drive
Did that make you feel good inside?

Go ahead and use that as a threat
Because that is something you are going to regret
I’m not saying your brother hasn’t started any fights
And he is old enough also to know the difference between wrong and right

No one is perfect and that includes me
This relationship needs to get better or you will see

That a bond between a family will be broken
And the words between a family will never be spoken
So if this is what we want ,then this path it will lead
And if it’s not, we need to become the family we used to be.

I'm glad I kept this as one of my favorites. I just read it again and I must admit it was better the second time around.

Sometimes, it is too near under our nose for us to appreciate the blessings of a family. And, sometimes we need room to move apart and see what life is really about. You see, eighteen isn;t really grown-up; it is a time when we move on to go to the next phase of our development. You sure have a lot of insight and character and let us hope that young lady listens up a little. I like your warm style of writing and you don't hold back and say it real straight and that is a plus, young wordsmith.

about 5 years ago i was diagnosed with epilepsy and couldn't drive so i let me lil sis use the car and stuff and she just seemed to take advantage of everything i did for her.. i don't play that game it's not fair to anyone and that is how i felt at the time when i wrote this i don't know if i could ever stop talking to my family because they are all i have. but ur right at 18 doesn't mean ur an adult but ur old enough to know what u should and shouldn't do expecialy to your family.. i hope ppl get something when they read my poems only if it helps one person. when i write i don't hold back i say it how it is.. hehe.. thank you for the comment.

i am that way in life and i like it because people know where they stand with me and i know where i stand. eighteen isn't really grown up but when but you have to be when you are having a kid or have one. my twin sis had her first kid at 16 and made it all through high school but no two ppl are the same. she has done alot better now she is in college so i am not going to bitch about that and things have gotten better. thanks alot

I've been reading through your poems. I lived this one. We got through it though. TS
