Morning’s Metamorphosis

Poem Commentary

This was a unusually bitter cold morning when I arose early before daybreak to sit out back on my enclosed porch facing east and watch as the blackness of night changed to the grey cloudiness of dawn and finally into the bright prominence of day. Sometimes it's worth the effort to wake up early and watch a new days birth.

Morning’s Metamorphosis

Black silhouette’s of winter stand

In sharp contrast against the bland

Of matted grey veiled wispy haze

Broken only by planet Venus gaze.

Knarled branches in twisted grotesque shape

With arthritic swollen jointed nape

Amid web of leafless branch design

In a frigid winter’s morning clime

Of frosted monochromatic gleam

In this Jack Frost painted window scene.

Now as light of day begins to dawn

Sky lightens while squirrels arise and yawn

And color blue returns to sky

And brightens as the day draws nigh.

A long pink iridescent ledge

Above this horizon’s lowly edge

Sweeping down from north to south

Like a stroke victims crooked mouth.

Then all the mystery dispenses

Black silhouette’s now brown in denseness

And green returns to winter trees

Of evergreens which held their leaves.

IN a while the sun will break

And glare into this day’s landscape

To end this bitterness of cold

The grip this night that’s taken hold

And blossom forth in southern warmth

That brings our visitor’s from north

Their migratory pattern’s formed

In ritualistic yearly norm.

Not robins or the whooping crane

But species that are far more vain

That come to spend their nested cash

…Snowbirds in swelling numbers vast.

Oh how special this bit of verse is Whiskers. You've painted in words the beauty I so miss. I lived in Florida for 3 years and although a Northern gal I find each holds treasures. Knarled branches in twisted grotesque shape With arthritic swollen jointed nape Amid web of leafless branch design Fantastic observation and decription. Thank you for the pleasure I felt. Justalady

Thank you Justalady, I appreciate your words of encouragement. Like many poets I usually write just for myself to capture the wonder of the moment for future reflection. So often we run the race of life so fast that we miss it's subtle treasures of God in nature, unrequited love, and the simple beauty in an unexpressed thought. Glad you experienced some of our southern hospitality, even for just 3 years.

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
