Selflessness Is Dead
Where is there room in a loving heartFor any selfishness to make a start?
If one is truly in love with another
They themselves come after the other.
After all, isn't that how is should be?
Though something different is all I see
I still have hope in a love so pure
That selflessness could live and endure.
My future and advancement come last
Just as it did in the romantic past.
My endeavors are a second thought
As long as your desires are all bought.
My needs and wants are second too
As all that I am prefers to please you.
My love burns like so few others
Because what we're taught smothers
Any romantic notion we may have
And in the end teachings will halve
Most everyone's idea of selflessness
And replace it with self-centeredness.
If only people were less ambitious
And their values were less capricious
Then love would have the same name
And meaning as before it was a game.
But sadly much has now changed
And the reach of love is less ranged.
The self is more important than a lover
And many push away just for cover.
The future on one is over the other
The self wins against another.
The desires of the selfish mind
Leave real love a hard thing to find.
And because of this it's hard to cope
With a lack of love and joy and hope.
But still I can dream true love lives
And someone still just purely gives
Without regard for themselves.
But such a thing is like the elves;
Largely fiction now, but some believe
In a thing that most can't conceive.
Sadly though, for the most part
Such a selflessness of the heart
Is largely dead in this we share,
And in it's place,
Only selfishness is there.
