The Answer

Perhaps I would speak to you of my sorrow
The one that life has given to me
To hold on my experiences
And perhaps to share my feelings for a time

Or perhaps to speak to you of the past
Of memories that are not clear
Of dreams that smash into the glass
And perhaps my tears

And the games that rule the day
In a virtueless world awaiting hungrily
To gorge itself on the sweet innocent
As I too have been
But am no longer prey
For I too now feast with the hunger

And once a long time ago there was beauty
There were the smiles
And perhaps some carefree words of another time
There was a warmth in the sunshine
There was a sweet purity in the whispered words
And a purity of the soul
Left without questions to be answered

But people change and sometimes become the truth
In bitterness
Perhaps beaten down by the weakness
Perhaps too involved in self pity
Or an urge to punish those who touch too closely

And the isolation becomes security
That can not be taken away
Something in control
And perhaps only appears to be the answer...

What is the answer? This is an interesting writing! Never thought of isolation as security, but if I think about it I can see where that would become a view.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
