Blinded

Poem Commentary

Just a thought that passed through my head as I found myself superficially smiling at people and making small talk that made me want to scream.

Blinded

Blinded by my rays of hope
I can't see past my own reflection.
This miserable smile I force myself to wear
Fading quickly.
Becoming transparent.
The dilusional optimism I carry
Weighs me down.
All the while I beg for a clear picture
Something to sink my teeth into.
My unimaginable reality soon to take place.
If my dreams would take me
I'd let myself go.
Evaporate to a higher realm
Blinded by the rays of hope.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
