Take the Time
I got up early this morning
and I took a look around
I saw things I’d never seen before
as well as unheard sounds
I heard the sound of silence
not corrupted yet by man
I saw the beauty of a sunrise
as it reached across the land
I sat and watched the chipmunks
as they scurried ‘round the tree
I even heard the steady buzz
of a big old bumblebee
I saw myself a hummingbird
that hovered in mid air
almost like the hand of God
had somehow placed it there
I heard the birds talk back and forth
like they’re the best of friends
who hadn’t got a chance to talk
since gosh, I don’t know when
I saw the beauty of the flowers
for the first time in years
I picked some for my mother’s grave
and watered them with tears
I saw the color blue
like I’d never seen before
It used to be the way I felt
but now it’s so much more
like the color of a robin’s eggs
or a light blue summer’s sky
the color of a singing Jay
or my daughter’s twinkling eyes
things that stand for goodness
things really quite sublime
but these things, they were always there
I just never took the time
