Beaten Boxer

Beaten Boxer

Feeling punch drunk
Beaten, bloodied and bruised
Cut up, thrashed, cheated
Knocked around and used

Nine rounds in ring
With a broken nose and swollen eyes
The guy was much bigger
The fact I lost was no surprise

Why did I do it?
No one even knows
I took my lumps, was defeated
Punch after punch I took those blows

A light weight
In a Heavy weights class
All I got was pummeled
Then knocked to my ass

Even in defeat
I still have my pride
A lofty goal I had
In the ring I tried

Out classed and out sized
I was the smaller man
With a little more training
Some day will I beat him? I think I really can!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
