    Cold Cuts

    The drone of feeding flies warned me

    I should have turned and run

    Before the wind freshened

    Searing my nose with a strange slow burn

     

    Looking at the slumped remains

    Vacant eyes drying stiff

    No longer squinting into the setting sun

    Caught mid-thought forever

     

    I marvelled at their height and heft

    The stringing of their naked sinews

    And wondered if I would have liked them

    Had they not been our enemies.

     

    I looked for others of my clan

    We were the fortunate ones

    Our ranks won while they just fled

    Or died, blood spilling pent-up hate

     

    Nearby, my cousins robbed the dead

    One of them flashed a flint knife stroking

    Counting cock tips as he sliced

    He’d heard one hundred bought a princess.

    WHOA!!!!! This grabbed my attention, but left me wondering... Who took control of our Harv's mind!!! Very dark and different from you! Lol....

    Whether one considers this a poem of slaughter, cannibalism, or torture/dismemberment, it certainly is a powerful message. ginga

    This was all a calculated gambit on a kings part to eliminate a rival. It didn't work. See my reference on another response. Harv

    Oh wow... this is a side of you that I'm certainly not accustomed to, Harv. The imagery is outstanding and the storyline is grotesque, but nothing short of fascinating. Wonderful, wonderful write!

    As I read I kept waiting for you to turn "cold 'cuts" into some sort of comedic sandwich but to my surprise that never transpired. Dark and down right scary.

    wow Harv - pretty dark stuff for you! you joining Poets of Blood? lol...this was really great - from the first stanza it just pulled me in. very primal - very good writing. 10 my friend :)
