cliff's elbow

cliff's elbow

donna says " hello sweetie"
and recognizes me.
i used to not like her because
she called everybody honey , sweetie
darling or - baby and sugar.

but now i sort of like the way she remembers
that i prefer ordering the local east-end mashed cauliflower
as a side dish.

it's not on the menu like this but
she makes things happen at cliff's elbow room - vuala.

so donna is really nice and i think she has gotten skilled
making people on the opposite side of the bar seem
at home  without getting too deep into their lives.

i used to cringe when donna called me sweetie , honey or baby like i was a - diner john - .

now i embrace her warm and inviting pet names

donna knows what she's doing

i know nothing .

what miss Donna is accomplishing is the basic "Cheers" environment. Don't you feel more comfortable when the help knows and remembers your preferences? Makes you feel special, more at home...you have her at a disadvantage, you are not name tagged.... A good read of a common peeve...but honestly honey, we mean nothing disrespectful. i do not agree with your last line... you know plenty. mlea

I used to think that people who called everyone sweetie or honey did so because they couldn't remember the names. Maybe that's true, but they certainly remember which people they like and which they don't, and you can bet the ones they don't like don't get the pet names. The people they don't know who get pet names are merely being given the benefit of the doubt, out of the goodness of a warm and loving heart. I like the way you tell a story in your poem. I now know Donna in a way I would never get to in the real world (I'm in Washington - the one in the upper left corner of the country). One thing: it's spelled voilà. I suppose you may already know that and only spelled it the way you did so people who didn't know the word would still know how to pronounce it..... Did I say how much I liked your poem? VERY much!

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
