the 4th of war
the 4th of warwe had a party
on the 4th of july
and it got dark
all but three went
towards the beach
fireworks ; all but three vets
i said " come on guys"
they stayed put
the old man said "they remind
me of the smell of death
on normandy beach"
the sixty year old said
"the pop- pop - pop
reminds me of the 47
mortar attacks i survived
in vietnam"
the fireman who lost his
buddies on 9-11 shook his
head and drained his beer
i walked away thinking -
are we celebrating war or peace
with those star spangled rockets
exploding over our heads ?
