The Mistake

The Mistake

You displayed all your charm, promised to keep her
from harm. The love you lost is not at your arm.
Your mistake, you took the other on a date. Ignored
what could be your fate. An amateur, never thought
about the big picture. This future did not have to
be a permanent fixture.
The beauty who needs no make-up to be made up. Skin
of the perfect color, for you there will be no other.
My heart will forever bleed, this hurt is true indeed.
Those words to your friends, the ones you just had to
say. Killed my heart that day, and I don't know why
I chose to stay. I should have done us both a favor
and gone away, for both our sake.
Yours truly,
The Mistake

Once upon a time, there lived a little girl in tiny cottage in the forest. One day, she wnadered in the woods, soaking up sunshine, and fresh air, and came upon a small pond. At the water's edge, she found a boy holding a lonely white rose in his hand. Seeing the girl, the boy gave her a big smile and held out the rose. "See?" he said. "It's just like you! Beautiful and bright, lonely as the moon at night. A special flower for a special girl. Just believe, and your dreams will unfurl." She took the rose and the boy ran away, laughing and singing. She gently stroked the roses' petals, closed her eyes and smelled it's perfume. "I can never be like this rose," she whispered. "Roses are meant to be loved and desired, treated with care and greatly admired. If I'm a flower, I'm a dull colored sot, not good enough for my own special pot." Then she thought of what the boy had said about her dreams. The girl smiled and thought of the world and everything she loved about it. Then a faint glimmer of light flashed in the distance, and the most wonderful smells beckoned her forward. She came to a clearing, and found that her most wonderful thoughts had come to life on the forest floor! Her Pen and Pad, her two greatest friends awaited her, skipping and laughing along with the boy who gave her the rose. "I told you silly," he smiled again. "You just have to believe. It doesn't matter if the other flowers run away and find new gardens to play in. We all think you're wonderful and special, and we can't imagine another person we'd love to admire! Come play with us and find your smile again." For you Sandy, the lone rose in a field of weeds. Keep your head high.

I know this was years ago now, and yes I have read it many times. Today I was feeling a little down and I started reading my own poems and comments. I have so many from you with encouraging messages. I got to this and for reasons that I can put out of mind but never forget. This particular poem eats at my being and I wish I could get over it, but unfortunately I live this reminder everyday. Well I have to say your words here have been by far the most inspirational and encouraging words I have ever received from anyone. And delivered through the story of a lone rose. You made me smile again. Thank you, I still appreciated it years later. Hope you are well

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
