    Poem Commentary

    People often wonder what goes through the mind of someone who is homeless. Here it is first hand.

    Survival

     Survival   35 Lines

    Wake up! Travel by bus to the locker room,
    Hope I dont find a note to seal my doom,
    Doesnt matter,
    Normal chatter,
    Air clatter,

    Rushes my head as I prepare to clean,
    The dirt from a day or two of lifes mean,
    Streets that ive been on running running running,
    On the move in hope for work im gunning gunning gunning,
    But back in the shower I find peace that is but momentary,
    As if living life on the streets was the gang leading me to the cemetary,
    Or war and the city is the battlefield,
    With nothing but my own mind as my sword, my shield,

    Cleanly washed, cleanly dressed, Smelling good, smelling fresh,
    Revitalized for the day so that I again can mesh,
    And butt heads with craigslist once again,
    Look on gigs to see what cash I can earn and place in pockets within,
    And yes there is work, work for the skilled, work for the long term,
    But those skills I have not, so on i must like a traveling germ,
    I look down, I look hard, I look clear,
    Hoping there is work for without hope I fear,

    And time passes, keeps a clocking, keeps a moving,
    All the while id rather be by the beach on the grooving,
    With some woman I admire,and for once admires me,
    Content id be looking at my American dream, happy,
    But more time passes its 4 o'clock and still no work, oh man, oh shit!
    I needed cash but count my losses because im too legit to quit,
    There isnt much I can do, i guess I dont eat today,
    I didnt work so I dont eat, the saying is true, a price I pay,
    No choice but to find a place to rest in the cold, sleep my pain and hunger off,
    Watching the beggar across the street and his buddy looking down on us both with a glass of wine from a luxurious downtown loft,
    Neither one knows my fate and the former knows not,
    He and I are much the same except my hustle is all for naught.
