Wedding Vows

Wedding Vows:  56  Lines

Never the man to seek marriage, I still understand its purpose, its place,
How it can bring tears across the face,
Of even the mightiest man in the human race,
Where his tears would plead their case,
Of joy for what he has seen,
In which to hearts a keen,
Seemed to be joined together as one,
At that point they would be introduced as Mr. and Mrs. someone,

So I found it best to put myself in that position,
What would I tell a woman standing before me who would be my wife, my deep intuition,
Well first I had to find a woman in my past worthy of that place,
What woman if I was stupid enough to marry would stand there in grace,
And hear me say my peace, my joy,
Only 2 come to mind, one I've longed for since I was a teenage boy,

Her name is Salma, I'm sure you know the rest,
I really could see myself overwhelmed with this life test,
And the other has a name that starts with the letter S too,
We've connected on deep levels and it's a shame she isn't my boo,
But if either of them were, this is what I would say to them,
Have them awed in glory and astonishment from him,
Who is also me, let me not haste yet another moment,
Or I'll be sitting there with great atonement,

"My love, I promise you one thing no matter how hard or good times get,
Something so powerful that you will never forget,
All the days of my life for as long as I live,
I will bestow you comfort, compassion, kindness, and humor to give,
You joy in your heart whether rich or poor,
That you may find peace in your soul forever more,

And I will always give you the respect you deserve,
Even if I'm cranky and fall into reserve,
I will also continue to see you as my equal and not my rival,
Together we can conquer anything, including survival,
These are the foundations of who were are together,
It is the reason why we are here on this day together,

Through these and these alone our love thrives,
And is the life force of our passion that survives,
For you were the woman I often yearned, and daydreamed to temporarily call my own,
Long before I knew you in the lonely nights I'd roam,

In you I have found comfort where comfort could not be found,
Where I once had chaos, now there is peace abound,
And just remember in later days and years to come,
When we aren't so great looking and feeling like a bum,
That I still feel the same way about you as I do today,
These vows I do present, sweet beauty of May,

In life I've given but never given my heart,
Today is the first day I truly start,
With a kiss I close, tears down my face,
I love you, and I stand here next to you ready to take my place,
So join me now and take my hand,
For I have laid out my heart, in truth, the master plan!"

A lovely tribute to the sacred ceremony of marriage, when two individuals unite mind, body and soul to create a lifetime of memories; how poetic you are in your romanticism. Love, sadly in this day and age has little meaning to those who precariously propose; walk down the aisle and shortly after divorce. To hold marriage in sacred regard, a union made with only the deepest of commitments is commendable. A beautiful write.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
