Yellow Petals
One by one the petals curl and fall to the groundLeaving a yellow carpet upon the red brick
And trailing off on the grasses that surround
Still a few stand like a burning candles wick
The wind breezes through in little dervish circlets
The petals arise in their own animated dance
Partnered down the path towards where the sun sets
Capturing spinning golden moats on a white lance
The wind picks up and brushes the petals away
As if to say it has tired of this dainty game
Across the yard to the lee of the wall to stay
Do petals once wild regret or are they now tame
For a while at least the red brick swept clean
For a moment there is no trace of carpet laid
As I in reflection upon the fence rail lean
Upon the price of a dance wild yellow petals paid
