Beste Freundin (Best Friend)

Poem Commentary

This is a small tribute to my very best friend, who means so much to me. Words will never be enough to adequately express my love for her, yet I will never stop trying. Thank you, Erin, for being exactly who you are and for showing me that 'family' is not just in name or blood, but is in the Heart.

Beste Freundin (Best Friend)

As I travel the landscape of my heart,

I contemplate each of the finest qualities

and discover just how many

began with a foundation of…you.

I turn down the path and

view the Meadow of Friendship.

Its appearance has changed drastically

since you entered my life,

and as such, each of the flowers

fittingly echoes the color of your eyes,

teal with gold flecks.

Because of you

I was no longer only a friend to others.

You revealed the secret of how to be in

both positions at once

by being a friend to me.

I would let others depend on me

yet you were first who encouraged me

to depend on you.

Wandering further, I come to

the Mountain of Expression.

Images of your smiling face

ring the base of this massive tower.

Your influence transformed

this molehill into the

magnificent Mountain before me.

Because of your emphatic campaign,

I was determined to

make myself heard

and started to believe in Me.

Next on my journey

was the Ocean of Faith.

Formerly a mere puddle,

my Ocean is now expansive and full,

dancing with reflections

of your countenance

in so many waves.

You alone, with your rainstorms

of compassion and love,

made my Ocean swell to life.

You taught me how to believe and

not only in other people.

You proved I could liberate myself

from sorrow and loneliness

by flinging myself,

fully and with abandon,

into Faith in God.

The landscape of my heart

is decorated lavishly throughout

with reflections of you

and the joy you offered to my life.

And while I remain absolutely Me,

I am honored that you,

tirelessly and generously,

encouraged the discovery

of exactly who that would be.

What a beautiful tribute, Simone!! We all have special people in our lives who have helped mold us into the individual person that we were meant to become. You've done a fantastic job acknowledging and expressing that with this poem. Well done!

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.
