To Blacks Who Think Like Me

Was Clarence Thomas, reflective of America’s promise
To Black America I’d like to know
And was America’s Promise to Blacks unlike Clarence Thomas
    Something the promise doesn’t show

To me Clarence Thomas is the exception, not the rule
Although he may have grown up poor like me
And it’s my opinion he was just one more tool
    To disguise subtle bigotry

I’m exercising my right to be outspoken
In this matter as it seems to me
And it looks pretty much like he was a token
    By Papa Bush exclusively

I don’t have nothing against the man
But his judgments are not for true equality
For all citizens in our great land
But on the ideals of the Republican fantasy

And a republican lead government got us to where
We are at this particular time
Through rhetoric of Terrorism through fear
Building convincing reason that to me does not rhyme

Since the repealing of certain taxes we have a short fall
    In our world and nation
With very little economic expansion if any at all
    A perplexing situation

So was Clarence Thomas reflective of America’s Promise
As a goal to shoot for in American Democracy
Maybe to Blacks who embrace the judgments of Clarence Thomas
But not to Blacks who think like me

    H. Wilson
