    We the People of Ebony

    We the People of Ebony

    We the people of ebony
Has written in blood our legacy
    Across the pages of history
In our continuing quest for equality

From the cotton fields of slavery
To the lily white halls of bigotry
We’ve fought a racially biased economy
    In a double standard society

Fighting Jim Crow laws that against us promote violence
For many years we marched in silence
We were never victims of circumstance
But always victims of racial intolerance

And now through drugs, immorality, and illegal guns
They seek to destroy us through our precious young
Through the concept of gang violence, and false pride
    Our youth are committing genocide

When will we the people of ebony
Take up the stand to vigorously
    Stamp out racial inequality
And demand that our people at last be free

    H. Wilson

This is a well written poem. The end rhyme is a little unusual, but my favorite stanza is- "From the cotton fields of slavery To the lily white halls of bigotry We’ve fought a racially biased economy In a double standard society" A powerful piece of writing. Good work!

For sure, my brother, you have spoken my sentiment very clearly. This is an excellent poem.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
