Uncertain Childhood Days
Catching minnows at a road side ditch
Scratching from poison ivy’s itch
Evading the blackberry’s prickly thorn
Listening for the Bond’s bread truck horn
Searching the wooded landscape
For the bountiful harvest of wild black grapes
A hobo bun with a slice of Colby cheese
Washed down by a Big Giant Cola to please
A hungry kid’s ravenous appetite
The beauty of a star spangled Delmarva night
Ghostly tales that causes fright
On a cold Delmarva night
Listening to the Motown sound
Little kids joyously dancing around
Cousins, friends, sisters, and brothers
When not fighting, playing with each other
Going to school in two feet of snow
Whether or not we wanted to go
Whether or not it was hot or cold
In obedience you did what you were told
Doing your chores every single day
Before you and friends could join in play
Wishing you could grow up in a hurry
Failing to see that you had minimum worry
As your parents provided your every need
And through God’s love you found the strength to succeed
Despite you selfish childish ways
You made it through uncertain childhood days
