Poem Commentary

Thinking on the consequences of our actions, and how they eventually come back to us. I was fortunate to have Sons and Grandchildren, but what of those who wanted other things? This is for them.

As In a Blink of an Eye

I have waited for you my whole life
First I found the perfect wife
Then I got the perfect job
Found the door - turned the knob
Climbed the ladder to find success
Took much longer than I could guess
But I didn't become what I wanted most
My hearts desire became a ghost
Eventually I made the top
Too late to become the perfect Pop
To late for children of our own
Too late to share what I now own
My children never came to me
What I wanted most well never be
No lovely family became our fate
Too late for us - too late, too late

As time slips away life is missed completely. I think you want the word "will" in the line "what I wanted most, will never be." I don't think you need the last two lines they just restate the line above; what will never be. A poet friend/RH Peat

How I hate those typos. I don't mind the restate - just punches the point. Thanks for reading.

Your poem is honest and brings home the desires that are held at bay, and not used to a launching pad of being. Do we all have an ernest wish that the poof genie did not grant? ... I think so... I think the entire time we're here, we want and want more... insatiable beings... wanting it all, as if we're gluttons at the table of feed me... I wanted a son so bad, I beyond sighed each time life blessed me with a daughter... and I didn't have much time to lament my failed wish... and now I think... hmmmm. perhaps it was ok... for I was good with girls... and maybe I would have created pansy boys or weak sons... and instead, I have strong daughters... And while some work HARD to become a parent at all... and are not given the gift of parenting... others are given a bundle of offspring, and are wretched role-models... The rhyme or reason is the free will ... to a degree, we can control our energies... but mostly, we can only control our reactions to what befalls or is bestowed upon us... You evoke a lot of thought and you say it with kindness too, without reprimands or disapproval... disappointments come with every present we receive... just as the sun brings another day of experience.... and another joy is waiting, no matter where we are, or what we're doing...

Sorry I missed your most philosphical response, Springsize.

This is so true. In a blink of an eye your children grow up and if you are not involved in this process you cannot regain it; it is gone. This happened to me and for year I beat myself up for not being their but I no longer do that. What is done is done and I walk from this moment on in a true path all my own and alone. This is very powerful and I hope the young parents who read this take it to heart.

I'm one of the ones who never had a family. I always thought I wasnt hurting anyone. I was wrong. I'm sure if all parents look back, they can find mistakes, but no matter what, they did give the gift of life. That's got to count for something - 10 from me

I knew a woman in her 60s a number of years ago. She was afraid of being hurt and never married. She spent her last years in regret. And she was a wonderful woman, who would have been a wonderful wife. Thanks for the visit, Artie.

Walking awhile in someone's shoes may shed the light on a different perspectives...and broaden our range of understanding. Nicely put!

Thanks Sam - you are savvy...

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
