    TEN THOUSAND PIPES OF PEACE

    In my nostrils are the aromas
    of ten-thousand camp fires
       In my heart - 10,000 pipes of peace

    In my mind drifts the smoke
    of ten-thousand death pyres
       In my heart - 10,000 pipes of peace

    Beneath my skin are the blood and bones
    of ten-thousand Chieftains
       In my heart - 10,000 pipes of peace

    In my ears are the cries
    of ten-thousand children
       In my heart - 10,000 pipes of peace

    In my memory are the lies
    of ten-thousand treaties
       In my heart - 10,000 pipes of peace

    Staying true to honorable values in the face of unending injustice, when it would be so easy to throw them aside and repay kind for kind. If that’s not heroism, I don’t know what is!

    I have a great respect for the Native Americans and the cruel tragedies and sorrows that they have endured.I pray that there will come a time in my lifetime when mankind will learn to be more compassion,understanding and accepting of one another.Thank you for sharing this wonderfully written poem with a great moral lesson.

    How apropos. The heart is desperately wicked, and who can know it? These power hungry peace makers always have a self centered agenda.

    I read and reread your words and to me it spoke of a lot of territory and living you covered. However, it is clearer still to me that no matter what life brought; your eyes look beyond and to a time of peace. Of course I cannot speak for you or read your mind; but I was mighty impressed because my quest is to see the day that like your heart holds (pipes of peace). In your profile I see you are as young as I am and may we both live to see justice and peace come to this world. Thank you for these verses. mamasan
