    Poem Commentary

    It's that time again!

    OCTOBER MOURNING

    Here he lies
         on hallowed ground
    Saintly man
         Heaven bound

    Eyes are shut
         and he's reclined
    Dressed his best
         and so refined

    No longer will
         he do his job
    Who is it
         who'll get the nod?

    Passing here
         within his hovel
    Who will now
         pick up his shovel?

    It was he,
         the one in town
    Who dressed us up
         and put us down

    So here we are
         we'll find another
    Perhaps 'twill be
         his younger brother

    Dressed in black
         with stiff-necked collar
    He'll serve us well
         in Sleepy Holler

    I have found my first favorite amongst the poetry I have read here...thank you so much. I am a big fan of Robert Frost...and this is the closest to his work anyone I've ever read has come! :)

    Dress em up to put em down... your words paint a grand picture - the gradour of the personality of this person capture in rhyme with a nod and a wink. Great job. Soul

    The character was Digger O'Dell [the friendly Undertaker] from The Great Gildersleeve radio program years ago - plus a little imagination on my part. It was fun to write. Thanks SW.
