    Poem Commentary

    This of course is a children's poem, without the benefit of illustrations - sorry.

    The Hoard

    Keep up the step,
             I think I heard him say.
    Stay in line there,
         or soon you'll lose your way.

    Up down and around,
         stepping where each had stepped.
    Each behind the other,
         heading where food is kept.

    There it is, up ahead.
         surrounded by the hoard.
    Lying there from yesterday,
         where Mom had had it cored.

    Some were cutting pieces,
         some carried them away.
    Now the trail went backward
          to the start of the foray.

    That apple soon got smaller
         and in no time went away.
    Ants will tend to do that
         with food on a summer's day.

    I am intrigued by this really nice piece which you list as children's poetry but somehow as the apple got smaller it got my brain juices going. Ah, woe is me, why am I musing on that apple geting smaller and smaller and the other verses sure gavd me a message. But, hey, I figured I would give it a try before the ants eat it away. I really had fun but I also found it fraught with some good lessons and I wrote a sticky post note saying: watch your step. Ah ha I am really having fun reading in to this children's poem and really am going to watch my step. lol
