THE DEPTH OF LOVE

Poem Commentary

I'm fear this is still a work in progress...

THE DEPTH OF LOVE

I stand behind you as you write
And watch your pen fly o're the page
No hesitation, no word trite
As each line you do now engage

The thoughts pour forth so full of life
I'm amazed  how quickly it flows
Words of our love and words of strife
On and on your Passion now grows

Over your shoulder I read each word
Oh, how they strike at my heart
My heart beat races - it's so absurd
Yet now it is pierced by a dart

Suddenly I now understand what it means
A film comes over my eye
You tell of your love and how it all seems
But You are writing me a good bye

I know you know I'm behind thee
You can feel my breath on your nape
Won't you now turn 'round and face me
And tell me what you see is our fate

I fear you are writing a letter
To slip silently under my door
Yet you write you could not love me better
While I know I could not love thee more

It's this damnable impersonal waiting
As I stand here silently behind
Watching as my life is abating
With no future that I can now find

My Dear. I can't live without you
Your husband I know you don't love
Somehow we'll find what we must do
We are joined here on earth and above

Now as you write I see a red drop
Dear God, what have you done
My thoughts and my breath now stop
I see now that no one has won

You swoon on the desk there before me
Your hand no longer writes
I take you in my arms and hold thee
My heart no longer fights

I saw not how it was taken
The poison decided so fast
My world was never so shaken
Our love is settled at last

As I lift you and lay you aside
The bottle falls to the ground
Bitter almonds - the scent cannot hide
It was planned - then the moment was found

I look back at what you had written
The last line tell it to me
"I love with a love that's forbidden
"Yet a love that is never to be."

The bottle - it is not yet empty
Swiftly I take the last sip
Together we make death's entry
Together we take this last trip

Together we stand before the Gate
We both shall hold our heads high
Love has conquered our earthly state
Our love at last will not die.

I love this passionate yet solemn twist on Romeo & Juliet...Very dramatic, and epic ending, or should I say beginning?!;)

I was standing there right behind her as she wrote. An interesting writing experience, Glad you liked it Sam.

That is probably one of the most prophetic poems I have yet to read...I feel as though you channeled me or at least a former plea...it was both touching and romantically sad....Love like that truly can not die....thanks for reminding me....excellent poem..

Although it is difficult to compare to the first iteration, without having them side by side, I will say that it is lovely if not lovelier than before.

;-) Thank you CH. It's better, but as I say - not yet best.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
