On Giving and Receiving

Poem Commentary

Remember who gives what, for even though you exchange gifts, there is more you can give in return.

On Giving and Receiving

They say 'it is more blessed to
give than to receive.'
Yet there is something to be said
for graciously receiving

Many years ago I received
a beautiful hand made sweater
But I had nothing to give
in return

I said I was sorry but
I had nothing to give
And then I realized I did
have something

I gave back the warmth
I received from the gift
Everytime I wore that sweater
I thought of who it was from

But that gift I received
lasted far longer that the sweater
for other sweaters I bought for myself
I returned the warmth back
to the gift giver of long ago

There is always something
you can give back
that is worth more and
is longer lasting
than what you might
have given as a gift

Life is all about giving. Not about how much can we get.

Thank you DH. There is always something we can give to another - we can give of ourselves.

Poetry comes nearer to vital truth than history.
