Come with me. Papa

Poem Commentary

Thinking of a painfully crippled grandson and his old and failing grandfather - both coming to their last days - together.

Come with me. Papa

Take me to the circus. Papa
Take me to the Fair
Let me have some popcorn, Papa
Won't you carry me there?

We need to go together, Papa
We can ride the Farris Wheel
Just one more time together, Papa
Just one more time for real

I think the time is slipping, Papa
Together we must go
Lift me to your shoulders, Papa
Carry me through the show

It's you and me now, Papa
Time to give up the fight
The pain will soon be gone dear Papa
I think I see the light

Let's go to it Papa
We've done it all before
I'm so glad we're together Papa
I could not want for more

No one will miss us Papa
Mom and Dad died last year
Grandma to is gone dear Papa
There is nothing for us here

The gates ahead are open Papa
We both can now go through
This will be our last day, Papa
I'm so glad that I am with you

There is nothing now to fear my Papa
They say it's as easy as pie
Take my hand now Papa
It's time we both must die.

WOW!! This is so moving and so very sad :( I loved it though. The flow and over all feel were great. At first it seems like a child lovingly guiding her Grandfather to his end, but I suppose it could also be the death of childhood for someone who has lost those that he loves. Hmm. I might be stretching though. Good write!!!

The wonderful thing about words, and especially poetry, is that it is interpreted as one feel it. I appreciate your comments. I think my better work is way back there in the beginning of my poetry.

Very moving poem. I lost several friends the past couple of year. They were both in better place now.

Don't think it is Heaven, but I'm pretty sure live does go on. All that lives, dies. All that dies, lives.

Call me crazy, but this is one person. Inside the old man, the child still exists. Fantastic piece of writing - 10 from me

Nicely done. We usually see only what is on the surface. You have replaced the literal with its symbolism. The literal is always symbolic.

Your words are a balm. They do not solve but they salve. Drew.

This is the SADDEST goddamn poem I've ever read! I'm still crying my eyes out. Stryx, my heart is breaking over that little lad. and you, too.

While I have my Grandchildren call me Papa, I liked the repetition of the name. I write from my head - sometimes from my heart. If I moved you you have honored me.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
