Finally

Poem Commentary

I wrote this when my ex husband was still my boyfriend. he was scheduled to leave for boot camp in 2 1/2 months. it was to be our first of many seperations.

Finally

I am sorry you have to leave,
But I know you have to go.
It cannot be helped.
This is the road that you chose.

God works in mysterious ways.
That is what many people like to say.
But I guess in this situation it must be true,
For even though you will be far away,
My heart shall stay with you.

I sit at home and think of you.
My heart aches and burns for our love that is true.
I cannot help but constantly cry,
Because without you here I feel as though I will die.

I can't wait for the day,
When you finally come back.
We shall be reunited,
And my heart will be happy at last.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
