Dark Mossy Tree

Poem Commentary

As a child, I played beneath this tree and it stays in my mind. It's a soothing memory.

Dark Mossy Tree

Dark Mossy Tree

Your dark, dank limbs grow wide

Remembering you in my mind

Your strong roots placed so deeply

Moss hanging oh so sweetly

Green peat growing neatly

Amidst damp bark beneath my feet

Branches raised reeling, arched dramatically toward the sky’s ceiling

Sweeping above me, telling stories of a century

Of times both glorious and grey

Breezes past skinned knees, broken in disarray

Buzzing bees

Lilacs, wildflowers that grew wildly in the breeze

Smiled nearby as promises broken and kept

Reveal for a moment, never to intercept

A mystical bird chirped, campfires swirled

Crickets hummed, frogs croaked, squirrels whirled

Dark mossy tree remembers all, echoing children’s laughter

Emitting swampy dreams long after

For to look at you is therapy for the soul

Remembering all the stories left untold

This little story is part real and partly my interpretation of it, as a dream, I envisioned what the tree felt like and what images it has seen.Thanks.

What a glorious telling of a place that certainly has meant something to you. Any stanza could stand alone as packet of images and tell a story of it's own; that is how dense this work is with images. Because there is a story here and it is a interesting one you want to read this work again and again and maybe again.

Jake, The poem is inspirational in its story of the dark mossy tree. It stands so high like an icon to be worshiped. The poem also reads similar to a fable or legend, that is why I rate it a 10 and also why it catches your soul and transcends the psyche if only for awhile. ginga

Jade, ty, I think it's wonderful that you found it soothing and spiritual.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
