My Keeper
Our story began on a dirt road,
by a daisy patch, resting under an aspen tree.
We were told that tree was planted when my grandmother was
baptized.
But that was so long ago...
We sang by the river one day,
watching the dark backs of trout
ripple through the water.
Your red and white bobber didn't move once.
You picked me sunflowers to put in my hair.
And the bees always liked me best for this.
One day, you got a dog.
I named her Ebony, because she was black,
like the wood that holds together pianos.
We fell in love, and all the days
seemed to just fall into place.
All the hours went a little slower, just for us.
And my heart, these days, beats a little faster.
I suppose I have you to thank for that.
