    Poem Commentary

A boy that I sit by in English class INSISTED that I name a poem after him. This is for you, Taylor.

    I followed behind, quickly
to make sure he didn't fall in.
    Before his light-up Spiderman shoes
    even touched the water,
a helpless toad caught his attention
    and he ran after it.

I smiled and watched him go about
when I heard Grandma say something.
I caught her in the corner of my eye,
sitting in a pale green lawn chair,
    smoking with Pa.

    "But you know,"
    she continued,
"He could be good for her."
Pa scratched at the gray stubble on his chin
    and grunted.
It was then that I discovered
    they were talking about you.
I smiled and scooped up Taylor,
promising him ice cream after dinner.
He smiled with glee, holding the toad
    in his small hands.

"I smiled and watched him go about when I heard Grandma say something. I caught her in the corner of my eye, sitting in a pale green lawn chair, smoking with Pa." — this brought me back to my childhood watching my grandparents. This is a wonderfully poetic tale. Bravo!!

The pictures you paint with your words are simply outstanding, BMB. This played out like a tiny movie in my head, and it's one of those movies that I could watch over and over again :) Great job!

Thank you! MN, you are so generous...

wow, Bullets, this is an awesome layering of voice and perspective ... you, the toad, Taylor, grandparents, and whomever "he" is ... which is "you" ... very nicely done, interesting write and an interesting vignette of little moments ... -dh
