Poem Commentary

nearly a year ago my son lost a good friend to a hunting accident. night before last one of his closest friends lost his 16 year old brother, who accidentally shot himself while cleaning a gun.

lessons in loss

sweetest child what can I say
these things breathe such regret
my heart breaks on sorry's
that you've known so much of death

at thirteen you should not have lost
so many you held dear
three grandmothers, a grandfather
and two friends in the last year

life, I guess, is like this
we're powerless in our fear
you never know what the next day holds
so love them while they're here

hold your head up high my son
you don't have to hide your tears
grieve your losses, then move on
it's life...we persevere

so stand beneath the morning sun
and raise your voice to heaven
fists clenched and your face screwed tight
scream out to God your question

but don't expect clear answers
death is something we all face
the sudden loss of those we love
helps us find our shape

come child, I have a shoulder still
you're welcome to cry there
let loving arms enfold you
while you struggle with despair

you are not alone...ever.

Brimming with pathos and distillations of wisdom. Grief must be navigated like a troubled sea. There is always more beyond. Harv

Such a beautiful poem with such a beautiful message, you son should feel honored and loved to have a wonderful mother like you. It is hard to lose loved ones. It hurts so much, and we are usually left with so many unanswered questions. But like you say, he is not alone. My heart goes out to your son in his moment of despair and grief. You are such a fabulous poet. I always love to read your works. My best to you and your son. lol Spbsdude.

thank you very much ...I always appreciate your comments and you're not such a bad poet yourself Dude :) I read your new post on poetfreak and commented there... be well my friend.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
