Corn Stocks and Summer

Poem Commentary

PIcking sweet corn was a hard job that ended into the evening. The rewards came with the taste of sweet melted butter on corn on the cob. Cool drinks and swiming.

Corn Stocks and Summer

In the summer corn stocks grow
Green tall sharp as a razor
Sweet tastie corn white or yellow
In the rolls grow tall gathered by buckets

On a hot summers day sweaty brows drip
Moist with heat from the day
Corn stocks drape heavy with corn
Waiting to be picked

Ice water needed cools the soul
Bring thoughts to the end of day

Mosquitoes bite the harvest is right
The pick must be today
Minds wonder and want to play

The cool lake ripples
The rope swing twirlers
We dive to the bottom
Washing our heat away

At the end of the day
Supper waits
With the taste of sweet buttered corn on the cob
Only to end with the start of another day

Betty - THis brings me back to my uncle's farm on PEI. I spent 3 weeks there to help him with the harvest and animals. It's a hard and rewarding life- I enjoyed it for a vacation - but I am a city boy at heart! :) Nice Job! :) Ken

Thank you

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
