The Last Unicorn of Poetopia
Chapter 1: The Kingdom Of PoetopiaIn a beautiful land far, far away was a princess and her castle.
She was young and beautiful and awaiting her prince.
One day she was gazing out the castle tower window, and there across a painted field of green grass and purple daisies stood a single pink unicorn with purple wings. She couldn't believe her eyes, so she had to get a closer look. She quickly grabbed her shoes and ran as fast as her long princess legs could run down those spiralling castle stairs. Finally, she had reached the bottom of the stairs and was approaching the doors. The castle guards stopped her and told her , you must not leave this palace, but she insisted.
I want to see that beautiful unicorn grazing in that beautiful green field of purple daisies. The two castle guards were not giving in, and they drew their sabers across the front doors . The princess then cried," she fell to her knees and began weeping ever so loudly. An idea had lit up inside her head and she sprung up and skipped away. The tears she had sobbed had dried , and she was now ready to try a different approach.
Oh castle guards , there is somebody sneaking into the enchanted gardens, she cried. The guards moved from there post at the front doors to go see if indeed there was an intruder. The guards dropped there sabers and ran quickly through the Halls of Justice and into the Knight's corridor , through the large arched door and through the Canopy of Dreams until finally they had reached the Garden. On the other side of the Enchanted Garden was Mermaid Pond were frogs danced across lily pads and birds drank of its clear, crisp refreshing waters. Nobody dared to enter the enchanted garden without the Kings permisson, otherwise strict punishment was to be enforced for such a violation. The King did everything in His ruling powers to upkeep the garden in a pristine appearance. He would go out every morning and feed the birds, play His lyre and sing to Heaven's angels.
The princess would sit around the castle as she always did, since she was forbidden to leaving the walls of the castle where she resided. So, all the day she sat and wrote poetry. She was working on a new write it was about The last unicorn of Poetopia. It was pink and had purple wings and large in size. It was the same one that she had seen through her castle tower window. She found some paper aside her bed and began to draw .
Her steady hands tracing with smooth strokes as the picture seemed to be coming to life. She was now sketching that beautiful pink unicorn she had seen grazing just past the Enchanted Gardens, in the grassy fields were purple daisies grew in abundance.
The loons in Mermaid pond laughed, there elegant display was but a broadway scene. A play in motion that could go unnoticed. Then the swallows and larks gathered round as they sang to the sweet tunes of the kings lyre. The Queen remained busy in a different kind of fashion, she would spend her days weaving clothes on the loom which her King husband had hand crafted . She would spin the yarn into pretty sweaters and dresses for all types of occassions. She was working on a dress for her daughter the princess , a ballroom dress, for the ball was in a couple weeks. She spent long, hard hours and many days crafting the perfect dress for the ball. She wanted her daughter to be the prettiest girl at the special event.
A Few days passed by and the usual rountine of the King's castle was in normal swing. They were preparing for the Grand Ball of Poetopia. The princess was so excited , but also she was sad. She had not found a date for the grand ball. The night fell upon the small Kingdom of Poetopia and the King, Queen and their daughter slept soundly and snug in their beds. The Princess then began dreaming, but not a rare dream but one that was all too familiar to her. Remember the rare unicorn she had seen grazing in the green grassy fields filled with purple daisies, we'll it was galloping through the field playing and riding upon it was the most handsome guy the princess had ever seen. She knew this handsome boy could not be from Poetopia but from some far away land she had never seen or even heard of.
She wished that one day she could escape these walls she had so long been a prisoner to, for just one day and run through those green fields and dance among those purple daisies. She even prayed everynight but the father her king said you must not leave this castle it is much too dangerous for a young princess as yourself, outside these walls. The princess angry with her father stomped off and ran crying all the way up the spiralling staircase. She knew that she may never see what lies on the other side of these brick walls.
The Princess was caught in a daze, a daydream, as if she had been ecplised by a deep twilight effect. These green fields and purple daises felt even closer than ever before. She could smell the sweet fragrance of the petals, and a euphoric high had come over her. The king was out in the garden, displaying his usual routine: feeding the birds, playing his lyre and singing to Heaven's angels.
The princess was up in her tower bedroom gazing out upon the green fields, watching as the purple daises danced like cattails in the wind. She was really hoping to see her pink unicorn once again. The princess could feel the cool, crisp morning air through the tower window but was never fully able to embrace it. She yearned to walk outside the walls but knew it was forbidden by the king. A New day had come and hopefully a new chapter
was about to unfold for the beautiful young princess. Would her time finally come to where she could an embrace an outside world she never knew.
The New day came just like any other day, the princess ran down the spiralling staircase where once again she met the two guards protecting the front entrance of the king's castle. She knew she had to think up a great schemeto draw the guards off of there post. She approached the two guards as she had the day before, although this time she made sure the guards would be preoccupied. The princess yelled from another room, the king would like to see you , now. He needs to address the opening of the grand ball. the guards paused a moment, then they both moved from their post. the king was off in His royal chambers, getting ready to prepare the guards with his regal statement. The princess knew this was her only chance to get away from the guards.
She made her move , she ran toward the door as the two guards were off in the royal chambers. She got to the front door, they were large and were controlled by a release lever that lowered the door, then becoming a bridge which spanned acoss the moat. Her hand quickly hit the release lever and the gears started to turn, and like the rain falls from blue skies down came the door. The sound of the gears turning were echoing through the halls of Justice, into the Knight's corridor and creeped ever so quietly into the Canopy of Dreams resting just outside the king's chambers.
Oh No, cried the princess as the door slammed down against the earth with a thud. The alarm had sounded, the guards were in the far back corner of the castle in the King's chambers, but not for long. The door to the king's chambers swung open fast and slammed against the brick wall. She's making her escape cried the guards, why didnt we see this coming.
The princess ran across the bridge ,over the the moat and ran towards the green fields filled with purple daisies. She was about 300 yards from the castle roaming in the green luscious meadow where she had seen that pink unicorn days from her tower window days before. She was finally free, we'll atleast for the moment. Her first encounter with the outside world. She was overwhelmed with enthusiasm and joy and leaped up and down, dancin' round in circles. Afar in the distance were the Enchanted Woods of Darkness. Nobody dared to enter the woods of darkness for it is said in an old legend that trolls hide in the trees and would ambush anyone who tresspapsed upon their soil.
The woods marked the territorial boundaries to Poetopia, the ruling kingdom and all its mystical glory. The princess knew that everybody that entered these woods never returned, not one soul had lived to talk about there endeavor. She dared not to enter for she knew her fate too, and she also feared turning back for she knew she would get an earful from the king.
She was certain the guards were hot on her trail , though she would not look back. She was relieved to be out of the castle away from all the kings rules. The King held a massive list of things a princess is not to do. She knew the list by heart, all that entries contained none were as familiar as the one rule she had just broken. A princess is never to leave the castle, it is forbidden by the king, only with the king's permission may a princess leave these brick walls behind her.
The princess who's identity was left anonymous to the wilderness, was all but a secret to this outside world. The fish in mermaid pond or trolls in the enchanted woods didn't care to know who she was, they were just intrigued by her beauty. She could feel those trolls eyes staring deep into her soul, long before she ever embraced that dark, enchanted forest.
The princess knew that nobody had ever made it out of the Woods of Darkness alive. She pondered deep and hard as she drew close to the entrance of these dark woods. Something, a voice was luring her in. What was she to do? Listen to the voice calling out to her , or dig deep into her conscience and turn back. She tried so hardto ignore the voice, but it became like a drug to her she had to go on. She entered into the darkness never looking back, only wondering what may become of her.
Chapter 2: The Enchanted Woods of Darkness
No light ever entered these woods , it was nothing but eternal darkness. These woods never knew day it was always night. The princess could feel the growing evil coming upon her. She could hear the cries of the wild and feel the energy of evilness. The trolls looked upon with glaring eyes saying nothing more than a whisper. A whisper that rang in the ears of every soul that entered the darkness. The dark woods had become a graveyard for lost souls. The princess's heartbeat was racing in anticipation and fear. She began to run dodging obstacles such as trees and rocks before falling to her knees. She could hear running water from what must have been a stream in the distance. The cries of the dark grew louder, the hungry trolls hid high in the trees where they took shelter from the screech owls. The princess knew now why her father would not allow her to leave the castle. She was overcome with fear, that leading her to believe, was it the woods that killed or the fear of the darkness and what was within it's dark lairs. She knew all who had entered had died, but did anyone really know how they died. Nobody had ever returned to tell of there encounters with the darkness.
The princess did not know the depths of these woods , it was very dark, midnight dark. No light shed through the lights not even the moonlight could pierce the darkness. The canopy blocked out all light, it was black as death. The cries now even louder, it sounded like a funeral in progress. She had now met the water's edge, but how would she cross. She did not know the depths or width of the stream. Then out of nowhere , from the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of something. It drew closer, she could see a dark shade of pink, a form was coming into view. She could hear the breath of the air that left it's lung's as it ran quickly through the darkness. It then stopped about fiffty feet from the princess. She could now make out the figure was the most beautiful unicorn she had ever seen, in fact the only unicorn she had ever seen. She thought this must be the same pink unicorn I'd seen from my tower window.
The princess was no longer afraid and walked toward it. It stood still, not even startled as she stretched out her hands to touch it. She knew this was the same one she had seen and had dreamed about. It held the same purple wings and pink bushy tail as she had described from her previous sighting. What would happen next would change her forever.
