I HELD YOU
I held you as an infant
With the greatest might.
I held you as a child
When scary dreams
Gave you a fright.
I held your bike steady
As you learned to peddle
With only two wheels.
I held you and kissed your boo-boo’s,
To help them to heal.
I held you as a teen,
When you cried.
As you cried,
For the boy that said he loved you.
But it turned out that he lied.
I held you as an adult,
Ready to face life,
On your own.
I held you before you
Packed up and drove away,
from home.
I held you before you walked down that isle
Giving you away to another man
That you loved for the longest while.
I held you when you smiled;
And looked coy.
Informing me
You’d soon have your
Own bundle of joy.
I held you one last time
Trying to keep
My tears hid.
Now I can only hold you in my heart,
As they lower the coffins lid.
