Mommas sleeping
(this one’s for my youngest, Joey.
He never gave up on me.)
As I lay in my dreamless sleep,
A steady vigil you did keep.
It was so hard for you to understand.
Why your momma couldn’t hold your hand.
With a repetitive shake you would plead;
“mom, mom, answer me.”
But on and on I continued, to close my eyes.
You must have thought, I was ignoring your cries.
When they told you; “momma’s just sleeping.”
I hope you know I was always keeping… You, in my heart.
For in my life, you’re always an important part.
“Momma can’t answer you right now.”
“Just keep telling her you love her.”
“We’re all praying she’ll wake up somehow.”
I can just imagine your triumphant joy.
When I awoke to wave at my boys.
Through the years after momma’s sleeping.
You’ve been there, always keeping….
A smile on my face.
Even in those times you say; I’m always on your case saying;
“Do better in school; I’m disappointed in the choice you made.”
“Do this, do that.” How you wish, my voice would fade.
But, whenever it’s a loving hug that you are seeking.
Rest assured, momma’s no longer sleeping.
