A Model's Puppet
For so long I just wanted to be like you
The multitude of icons
Flashing on my screen
And one day
When putting on my face
I looked in the mirror
To see a stranger staring back
I had to turn around
Make sure I was alone
Not some sick joke
But all I saw was me
And who I pretended to be
Shoulda given her a new name
Pasted a brand across her brow
Saying she was the media’s property now
Washing the makeup from my face
I watched it drain away
Melting together
Colours swirling every which way
A sickening triumph
For some names-less blond
Who strutted her stuff
For a million teens
Just tempting and taunting them
To be like her
And not as they were
The face I’d worn
Was just a tainted image
Of something they said I should be
Of people I don’t know
Products I can’t pronounce
And countries I’ve never been to
And now I’m me, at last,
Never been happier in a way
Saving money, saving time, saving me
The multitude of icons
Flashing on my screen
And one day
When putting on my face
I looked in the mirror
To see a stranger staring back
I had to turn around
Make sure I was alone
Not some sick joke
But all I saw was me
And who I pretended to be
Shoulda given her a new name
Pasted a brand across her brow
Saying she was the media’s property now
Washing the makeup from my face
I watched it drain away
Melting together
Colours swirling every which way
A sickening triumph
For some names-less blond
Who strutted her stuff
For a million teens
Just tempting and taunting them
To be like her
And not as they were
The face I’d worn
Was just a tainted image
Of something they said I should be
Of people I don’t know
Products I can’t pronounce
And countries I’ve never been to
And now I’m me, at last,
Never been happier in a way
Saving money, saving time, saving me
