A smiling goodbye
I knew the day it endedThat which we had once
Long ago called love,
When you touched my lips
With silky tips
Traced the contours of my face
And looked me in the eye
A gaze filled with regret
For everything to come
We sat side by side
Quiet in reflection
Trapped in the past
Which ended in the now
And now, years on
When I think of you
A small smile graces my lips
Once again pulled into k
What could but never was
I sigh, remembering
the care you took of me
And all the little things we did
Waking side by side
Coffee in foreign lands
Speaking the universal tongue
Of people lost to love
So I wonder and ponder
At where it all went wrong
There was no pain in parting
Just an aching sadness
That can never leave
The could have beens
The future left untold
Places we never saw,
Words left unspoken,
My love never died
Just drifted in its silence
Forever left to memory
