New Stars
Your papers came this morning
Your blank face stared at the coffee
As if it had the answers you sought,
Held my hand in supplication
Cursing the war in desperation
How men died when they were fought
Just because everything changed
Doesn’t mean it’s not been like this before
You march off to war
A tear marring your face
Saying goodbye
But I raised my hand to your lips
Stilling those words, I can’t hear them
Not now, not ever
Stead I turn you to the sky
Tracing the constellations
And pointing to my guiding star
‘Look to that when you are lost,
Follow it, let it guide your feet
Along a path that they can never forget,
Come home to me’
You shake your head in anger
Yelling that I should know
‘That star ends at the country border
I’ll sleep under a new sky
With foreign stars
Hidden by the smoke’
You shove my hand away
And stride off to war
Believing you are already lost
Your blank face stared at the coffee
As if it had the answers you sought,
Held my hand in supplication
Cursing the war in desperation
How men died when they were fought
Just because everything changed
Doesn’t mean it’s not been like this before
You march off to war
A tear marring your face
Saying goodbye
But I raised my hand to your lips
Stilling those words, I can’t hear them
Not now, not ever
Stead I turn you to the sky
Tracing the constellations
And pointing to my guiding star
‘Look to that when you are lost,
Follow it, let it guide your feet
Along a path that they can never forget,
Come home to me’
You shake your head in anger
Yelling that I should know
‘That star ends at the country border
I’ll sleep under a new sky
With foreign stars
Hidden by the smoke’
You shove my hand away
And stride off to war
Believing you are already lost
